Saturday, May 6th Transit Operator Career Fair

Want to explore a career with BC Transit? We’re hosting an in person career fair on Saturday, May 6th from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm PST at our Langford Transit Centre located at 1000 Henry Eng Pl, Langford, BC. 

We will have People & Culture, Operations, and Safety & Training representatives for you to speak to on site. Current Transit Operators will also be available to answer your questions about what a career with BC Transit is all about!

Transit Operator interviews will be taking place on site on a first come first serve basis! Bring your resume, driver's license, drivers abstract, and insurance claims history to get started! Jump on a bus and learn about what it is like to sit behind the driver’s seat!

Transit Operator Recruitment Search

BC Transit is looking for customer focused and safety conscious individuals who are passionate about serving the local community to join the Transit Operator team in Victoria! Not only is a paid, 7-week training program provided for you to learn how to operate every kind of bus in our fleet, we will also support you to earn your Class 2 commercial license with air brakes. Application Checklist

During the online application process, ensure you attach the following three documents in the Attachments step (this is a mandatory step; attachments must be in PDF format):

A 5 year Driver's Abstract dated within the past 14 days. Please include both the Provincial (P) abstract and the National (N) abstract. If you have lived in more than one province or jurisdiction within the past 5 years, please include your driver’s abstract from all applicable insurance providers, such as ICBC.

An unaltered copy of your Class 5 Driver's License.  If you already hold a Class 1 or 2 commercial license or Class 2 leaner's with #15 air brake temporary restriction, please include an unaltered copy of your driver’s license (both front and back).

A current 5 year Insurance Claims Experience Summary dated within the past 14 days. If you have lived in more than one province or jurisdiction(s) in the past 5 years, please include your claims history from all applicable auto insurance providers from the past 5 years, such as ICBC. If you have not resided in BC for the past five years or have not held ICBC motor vehicle insurance for a period of time within the past five years, please attach an unaltered copy of your insurance claims history letter from the insurance company with which you have previously held vehicle insurance.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for employment as a Transit Operator, applications must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Willing and able to work shifts (both straight and split shifts) anytime within BC Transit’s operating hours (23 hours each day with shifts beginning as early as 4:00 am and night shifts may end after 3:30 am) with non-traditional and sometimes undefined breaks. All shifts and work adhere to National Safety Code standards.
  • Clearly demonstrated customer service skill set including conflict resolution, problem solving and sound decision-making.
  • 2 years’ non-learners driving experience if not a current commercial license holder.
  • 5 years’ Claims Experience Summary dated within the past 14 days with no more than 1 at-fault claim in the past 5 years. Preference will be given to those with a clear Summary.
  • National (N) and Provincial (P) driver’s abstracts, each dated within the past 14 days indicating safe and responsible vehicle operation over the past 5 years with no more than 1 violation totaling no more than 4 points. Preference will be given to those with a clear driving background.
  • Minimum valid BC Class 5 driver's license or out of province equivalent. Class 1 or 2 also accepted. For non-commercial license holders: your Class 2 Learners License will be required for first day of employment (cost for a Class 2 Learners License is $15.  For more information on how to obtain a Class 2 Learners from ICBC please click here.
  • Ability to pass a comprehensive ICBC medical examination relating to the Motor Vehicle Act requirement for a Class 2 driver’s licence and capable of, after on-the-job training, holding a Class 2 driver’s licence.
  • No criminal convictions or pending charges relating directly to the Transit Operator position.
  • Ability to understand, speak and write English in order to comprehend BC Transit policies, effectively communicate with the traveling public and report on incidents involving safety and/or service.
  • A good knowledge of the Greater Victoria area is an asset.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands of a Transit Operator most often require manual handling of loads between 5 kg and 15 kg.  Manual handling requirements are considered to occur on a rare basis throughout the work day/week. Physical demands may include but are not limited to, activities such as:

  • Assisting with securing bikes on/off the bike racks; lifting/lowering the bike racks; and securing customers in wheelchairs and scooters
  • Reaching between shoulder and ground level to assist/serve customers, access emergency exits/hatches, secure/strap scooters and wheelchairs; or steer and adjust mirrors etc.
  • Rotating the neck and spine to shoulder check, view travel path and greet customers.
  • Squatting, crouching or kneeling to secure wheelchairs and scooters and conduct pre and post trip inspections.
  • Sustained sitting while driving
  • Navigating steps and stairs to access the buses, including staircases in bi-level bus designs.
  • Extended exposure to an indoor environment (95 % of the work is completed inside the bus)
  • Working outside to complete pre/post trip inspections if a bus breaks down on a route or to assist passengers when needed.
  • Working in close proximity of moving traffic.
  • Exposure to noise (running bus engine, air brakes, radio, background dialogue of riders, traffic noise, etc); vibration (associated with operation of the bus); and odours (exhaust fumes; pets/animals confined in carriers and/or service animals; passenger fragrances/perfumes and/or conditions associated with passenger personal hygiene).
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Interactions with the public in various situations; most public interactions occur inside the bus.
